Chalet Truck Camper – If you need to see elephants I will recommend a campsite.Advice given by a driver / guide in an overland safari truck ought to be heeded. We met him inside a campground in Maun, Botswana. His group were off on the three day camping trip towards the Okavango Delta. He said We Might need to pay close focus on directions or We Might likely miss it.
The campsite is located 53 kms. north of Nata, upon the Nata-Kasane road A33. The sign is small, though it‘s the only real sign for miles. When you leave the highway it‘s a 2 km. sand trail into your bush camp by having an office, café / bar, campground, several small chalets and also a swimming pool. The campground has no fences, assigned spaces, or services, so you merely park. The showers and toilets are unisex and open air. Water to the showers is heated by
a wood fire under an enormous water tank.
We‘re travelling in your VW Kombi and needed to stay the food in your fridge cool, therefore the office gave us some ice. The minimal electricity is provided by generators run at specific times.
Once settled, we walked towards the café for any cold drink. There‘s a watering hole in front from the café, and also to our delight three elephants were owning a drink and also a bath. It was eventually fascinating in order to watch them at such close range. Soon more arrived so we spent the complete day watching the never-ending action. Late inside the afternoon several young bulls were drinking and play fighting. They walked toward the café and also to our amazement walked as much as the pool and started to drink. Ben, the owner, explained water inside the waterhole has a higher salt content, so that they such as the pool water better. Perhaps one of the projects here is providing drinkable water to the animals from the area. At this stage We‘re sitting less than fifteen feet far from four very large, wild, elephants.
Elephants look big at any distance, however they look really big when they‘re so close.
Size matters if you‘re an elephant. The bigger you‘re, the greater you are able to push others around. We always felt so sorry to the babies – everyone pushed them around ! Mothers would push them out straight into the waterhole, then push them over for any bath. Fat little legs, trunks and ears everywhere as they simply struggled to obtain back on the feet.
